Panel 1: Bilateral Opening-up of China’s Financial Markets and Renminbi Internationalization— Opportunities & Implications
The increasing importance of China in the world economy and the continued opening-up of the Chinese financial markets has set the scene for renminbi to play a critical role in the international monetary and financial system. How is the status of renminbi compared to USD and Euro now in terms of trade, payment, investment, and reserve currency? What are the recent key developments in the two-way opening-up of Chinese financial markets? What further opening-up of the financial markets can help to drive renminbi internationalization to the next level? What role can Hong Kong take up in bolstering the renminbi internationalization?

Panel 2: Development & Prospects of Northbound Investment
Northbound Bond Connect has witnessed phenomenal growth since its launch in 2017. Bond Connect’s increasing ease in onboarding, trading, settlement and custody, and persistent infrastructural enhancements have played a unique role in the journey of RMB internationalization. The chapter of global index inclusion is close to completion.
What development should we expect to drive higher investor asset allocation and strengthen risk management frameworks? What type of derivatives do investors hope to utilize in their investment process? How has liquidity in the onshore bond market evolved since index inclusion? How has the relative attractiveness of Chinese assets vis-a-vis international fixed income markets influence portfolio positioning in a likely US rate hike cycle? What is the latest development of corporate credit risk and what lessons can we learn from the recent cases?

Panel 3: Development of Primary Market Access via Bond Connect
Whether it is the international or onshore China bond market, the primary market provides the most direct avenue for gaining access to bond allocation. It is BCCL’s vision to develop a common access point for onshore and offshore issuers, underwriters and investors.
What are the key trends driving investor demand? What are the challenges in accessing the primary market from an infrastructure and efficiency standpoint? What are the enhancements that investors and issuers would like to drive the development of the primary market to the next level? How can we increase the level of international participation in the onshore primary market?

Panel 4: Technical Innovation in Northbound Bond Connect
Technology and innovation are core values assimilated into the development of Bond Connect. Coined as the “developed market” among “emerging markets”, the Chinese financial market increasingly embraced international practices as investors deepen allocation in the RMB asset class, and technical innovation to cater for evolving trading, settlement and risk management needs.
What is the future of electronic trading in RMB assets? What further automation can we build on during the pre-trade and at-trade processes? How can electronic trading platforms help financial institutions better manage trading inventories and liquidity? How do FX Settlement Banks view the progress of regulatory development in serving investors’ FX risk hedging and monitoring needs?

Panel 5: ESG Investing in China
China has one of the most ambitious climate transition targets globally, having reaffirmed its commitment during the World Leaders’ Climate Summit in April 2021 for peak carbon emissions in 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The strong determination to decarbonise is also evidenced by the new 2021 PBOC Green Bond Catalogue which has eliminated clean coal and other carbon intensive projects. We have also witnessed ESG disclosure rate of CSI300 Companies improve from 54% in 2013 to 85% in 2019, driven by regulatory guidelines. Given the further harmonization of China and EU sustainable finance taxonomies, ESG investing in China is a generational opportunity that international investors need to focus on.
What is the development path of RMB Green Bond Market under China’s decarbonisation plans? What are the ESG investment opportunities in China for offshore investors? How can we drive further ESG related bond innovations? How can issuers and investors work together to improve the scope and quality of ESG reporting?
